Steps to Restoring Kettering Access

Steps to Restoring Kettering Access

Prior to resetting password:

  1. Remove KUW from all devices (Devices automatically attempting to access the network with your old password will lock your account)

  2. Gather Needed Information and Devices

    1. Kettering ID (needed for identity verification)
    2. Access to Non-Kettering Recovery Email Account (for resetting password and 2FA)
    3. Access to Recovery phone/multifactor device (for resetting password and 2FA)
  3. Understand Password Best Practices

    1. Do not reuse or modify previous passwords
    2. Every password used must be unique (if you used your Kettering password anywhere else, you should reset those passwords as well)
    3. Use passphrasesover passwords (See XCKD explanation)
    4. Consider using a password manager

Reset Kettering password using password.kettering.edu's 'Forgot Password' Feature

  1. Reset password through recovery email (quickest and preferred method)
    OR
Reset password through recovery phone number

  2. If your account does not already have an associated recovery email or phone

    1. On campus - Go to IT Help Desk in Academic Building or find available IT staff in the Learning Commons. Please bring your Kettering ID with you.
    2. Off campus - Call the Help Desk at 810-237-8324. Please have Kettering ID ready to reference
(Please be aware of the volume of requests this restoration represents and plan for a longer response time accordingly.)
    3. Once temporary recovery information has been entered by IT, you will be able to use the appropriate method(s) above to set a new password
  3. After resetting your password, navigate to Banner Self-Service to verify and/or update your recovery email and phone information.
This final step is critical for:

    1. Ensuring smooth future password changes
    2. Ensuring that you, and only you, have the ability to reset your password

Google Workspace 2-Factor Authentication

  1. If you have not previously set up 2-factor authentication for your Kettering Google account

    1. Ensure that you have at least one recovery method that is not tied to your Kettering account. (If your Kettering password is reset, you would be unable to log into your account to use that second factor)
  2. If you have already set up 2-factor on your Google account

    1. Log into mail.kettering.edu or at Google.com and use 2-factor to re-verify devices

Kettering Campus Wi-Fi (KUW)

  1. Ensure that you have removed the KUW network already from your devices
  2. Follow the Help Sheet instructions to log into KUW on your device(s)

Employee VPN

  1. If you have previously used employee VPN with Duo

    1. No changes are needed except to use your updated password at next login
  2. If you have not previously used Employee VPN

    1. We will not be prioritizing adding new accounts or troubleshooting existing accounts until the wider access priorities have been addressed.
