Password Managers

Password Managers

Remembering passwords is difficult and as more and more of our lives move online it becomes harder and harder to keep them all straight. To counteract this, we often use a few different strategies, each with their own flaws.

  • Using the same username/password combination with multiple sites - If one of these sites gets compromised, every other site that uses that password is also at risk of being compromised.
  • Writing passwords down on sticky notes, binders, or even virtual sticky notes - Easy to lose, and easy for anyone snooping to find.
  • Using a password convention that relates to the site you're accessing - Better, but once one password is compromised, it becomes easier to figure out the remaining passwords. Additionally, if there is ever a security concern and you need to change a password, it will become difficult to remember various one-off passwords that won't fit the convention.

If you're using any of the above strategy, it's time to consider using a password manager. It has a number of advantages of the strategies above, often including:

  • Many of the best options are free!
  • Ability to easily use more secure passwords
  • Easy reference if you forget your password without having to reset it
  • Synching across multiple machines, devices, and browsers
  • Auto-fill extensions in the broswer means you don't even have to type usernames and passwords once you've logged in
  • Most apps include the ability to securely save credit card information, social security numbers, passport/driver's licence information, insurance information, bank account numbers and more!

Some great options include:
