Microsoft Authenticator Setup Guide
Follow these steps to add Microsoft Authenticator to your Kettering account:
Step 1: Access Security Settings
- On your computer, go to mysignins.microsoft.com
- Sign in with your Kettering Microsoft account credentials
- Click on the Security Info tab on the left-hand side
- Click "Add sign-in method" or "Add authentication method"
Step 2: Select Microsoft Authenticator
When prompted to select a sign-in method:
- Choose "Authenticator app" or "Microsoft Authenticator" from the dropdown list (typically the 3rd option)
- Click "Add"
- Click "Next" when prompted to install the app (you'll install it in the next step)
Step 3: Install the Microsoft Authenticator App
On your smartphone, download the Microsoft Authenticator app:
For iPhone users:
- Open the App Store
- Search for "Microsoft Authenticator"
- Tap "Get" to download and install
For Android users:
- Open the Google Play Store
- Search for "Microsoft Authenticator"
- Tap "Install"
Step 4: Connect Your Account
- On your computer, click "Next" to display a QR code
- Open the Microsoft Authenticator app on your phone
- Tap the + icon or "Add account"
- Select "Work or school account"
- Point your phone's camera at the QR code on your computer screen
- The app will automatically scan the code and add your account
Step 5: Complete Setup
- After scanning, you may be prompted to enter a number that appears on your computer screen
- Enter this number on your phone and tap "Yes"
- On your computer, click "Next"
- You'll receive a test notification on your phone - tap "Approve" to confirm
- Click "Done" on your computer
That's it! Your Microsoft Authenticator is now set up and active.
How to Use Microsoft Authenticator
Once set up, when signing into your Kettering Microsoft account:
- Enter your username and password as usual
- You'll receive a notification on your phone
- Open the Microsoft Authenticator app (or tap the notification)
- Review the sign-in request and tap "Approve"
- You'll be signed in automatically
Troubleshooting Tips
QR code won't scan
- Make sure your phone's camera has permission to access the Microsoft Authenticator app
- Try adjusting the distance between your phone and the computer screen
- Ensure the screen brightness is turned up
- Clean your phone's camera lens
Not receiving notifications
- Check that notifications are enabled for Microsoft Authenticator in your phone's settings
- Ensure your phone has an active internet connection
- Try force-closing and reopening the app
Lost or replaced your phone
- Contact the Kettering IT Help Desk immediately
- You'll need to verify your identity and reset your authentication methods
